Although amnesia is considered a very serious illness, sometimes I wish I had it. No, I don’t want to forget about past people, sentimental memories, or important events. I want to forget about my bad traveling experiences. When you have a bad traveling experience – mishandled luggage, long lines, inadequate customer service – it sticks with you. Sometimes it can be traumatizing, but most commonly, it makes traveling experiences more stressful and less enjoyable. There are a lot proactive things you can do to prevent bad travel accommodations, but the best way to combat bad traveling is charter services. There are a lot of ways to travel charter. You could take a jet charter, bus charter, or maybe even a limousine charter if you’re feeling special. Nonetheless, all charters services offer you some amazing things. Let’s discuss them.

No matter where you’re from, there’s some element of you that desires the best things in life. We all want something luxurious, expensive, or simply above average. If you choose to take the plunge and book a charter service, you will be guaranteed luxury. I’ll use an analogy to illustrate my point better. Imagine all the different types of transportation we use in everyday life (car, plane, bus) with a customer service staff and about 10 times nicer -- that’s what charter services are like. You can expect to have at least one of the following things on all of your charter trips: gourmet meals, excellent customer service, lavish interiors, and excellent entertainment. These don’t even do it justice. See for yourself.

Without a doubt, one of the most obvious reasons for choosing charter services is that they make traveling much more convenient; they take a load of travel stress off your shoulders. There will be no more waiting in lines, no more lost luggage, and you won’t be forced to deal with Ida, the disgruntled member of the service team. Need I really say more? These services are designed for the sole purpose of traveling convenience. And that’s across all services – bus, jet, limousine, horse etc.

Another strong point for charter travel is charter service availability. Since many people don’t use charter services, there will always be available spots on planes, buses, and limousines. Charter services are also widely available through the all the major cities throughout the United States and Canada.

One benefit that many people don’t know about charter services offer is travel to remote locations. For an example, let’s use charter jet services. Charter jets are much smaller and more maneuverable, so they are able to land in smaller areas such as an island. Try landing on a small runway with a commercial jet. Charter jet services also can land at more airports across the world compared to commercial flights. What this exclusive travel also means for customers is faster trips and less time spent traveling. You’ll get to spend more time enjoying your leisure time.

Charter service marketing is clearly directed at wealthy individuals, upper-middle class citizens, and those who are financially secure, but it would be a disservice to say that these are the only people who could afford charter services. There are a lot of promotions that charter companies offer, so make sure to keep your ear to the ground and find a deal that works for you!

Are you a 'cruise curious' cottager?

Many in my acquaintance are lucky enough to own a country home; a cottage; a camp. I own one too. And, I love it. But ...

One thing that's not so great, is that a cottage needs maintenance, and time, and as such can come in the way of an owner and his or her plans to travel elsewhere; anywhere! For some it can become like the proverbial golden hand-cuffs, essentially keeping the owner so busy having fun and spending money, that there is little or no time or financial resources left over to travel ... Anywhere or any time. And, even if money is no problem, I have found cottagers are somewhat leery about cruising. Many believe - incorrectly - that cruising can't possibly be for them.

The truth is that of course cruising is not for everyone, but I have discovered in my time as an enthusiastic, if not full time agent, that there is indeed a ship; an itinerary; and a level of luxury and activity for virtually everyone.

So ... in this spirit; this belief that folks who own cottages should be able to experience the beauty and freedom of cruising; and paying particular attention to the financial well being of potential clients ...

Time flies (even if you’re not cruising)

We’re coming up to the three month mark here in Grenada, and my attitude has changed markedly versus how I felt about the island after the first week or two.

I suppose the primary shift in thinking is as a result of meeting more people. People with whom we have become acquainted - Grenadian people as well as folks from the U.K., many of whom are business people or entrepreneurs with the latter having been here many times over the years. One or two have made Grenada their permanent home. They have all been delightful!

We have also met several fellow Canadians who for various reasons have also made this beautiful island home. A couple from Quebec now own a marina, restaurant, and butchery - which by our limited experience - will have a very bright future. We met another fellow who built a 50 foot Ketch on a mountain top not 50 kilometers (30 miles) from where our summer home is located in the Laurentian Mountains. Louis now captains his craft, taking folks on sailing vacations all over the Caribbean from a few days in length, up to a month. You can contact him through the marina. It is indeed a small world.

We have also had the pleasure of meeting one or two of the ‘movers and shakers’ in the tourism industry here. While Grenada is still finding their way with respect to marketing ‘Brand Grenada’, it seems to me this is a country with great potential. And, I do believe they are trying to do all the right things to improve the country's tourism offering.

There does however seem to be a divide amongst the local folks we met. Not surprisingly (and only in my opinion) those who obviously have employment - particularly in the tourism industry - have demonstrated a palpable pride in both their country, and their work. I was even stopped once in St. Georges by a perfectly random stranger. All he wanted to know was whether or not I was enjoying my visit. Wonderful!

There are regrettably - also in my opinion - too many, obviously able-bodied but apparently bored adults with nothing useful to do. Or, at least many have chosen to lie prostrate, may asleep during all parts of the day, on the front stairs to their homes, seemingly for hours at a time. You see this everywhere. Unemployment is clearly an issue to be tackled, but I can't help wondering what sort of apathy must be present for young 30 somethings to choose not to do something to help their nation, even if only on a voluntary basis. There is also evidence of far too many very young women who have had children prematurely. And, without judging, I cannot help wonder about what role the 'church' plays in this. (There are churches and signs of worship everywhere here). I believe sex ed. should also be at the top of someone's list of issues to be dealt with. By the evidence I've seen, it should begin somewhere in the 3rd or 4th grade. And soon!

Having read the local newspaper - the Grenadian Voice - on a regular basis, and having talked to enough local folks here, I will leave encouraged that the current prime minister, Rt. Hon. Mr. Tillman - who by all accounts is a fair and honest man - is at the very least trying to make a difference.

Only time will tell. Grenada needs more investment, which will in turn drive the economy; improve the employment picture, and generally help the country’s 110,000 citizens.

Only one lingering doubt remains in my mind: do a majority of Grenadians want to help their country, or are they waiting for their country to help them?

For now, I’m going to enjoy my last several days here. Perhaps we’ll be back next year? I hope so!

A 'tender' from the Sun Princess shuttling passengers to St. Georges

This past week I had the opportunity to visit Carriacou; a small island 'Parish' of Grenada, W.I., and I did so via ferry.

This image is of a 'tender' (taken from my vantage point on the inter-island ferry) from the Sun Princess, and is seen ferrying passengers from the ship to St. Georges (the port city and capital of Grenada) and back. This, to remind all cruisers - but first timers in particular - that not all disembarkation is done on a gang plank, even if the itinerary has called for it.

St. Georges has a perfectly modern cruise ship docking pier, but on this day, the wind and waves made it impossible to dock the ship in safety. Therefore all those looking to see the island from the Sun Princess -and as it happens, the Celebrity Millennium - were shuttled to and fro via these bi-hulled diesel powered life craft.

The moral: always be prepared for the unexpected, even on the best and most attentive of cruise lines. Mother nature trumps all ... a good pair of non-slip soled walking shoes is a must.

Some time ago, I wrote in this 'electronic journal' that I wasn't all that fond of the people of Grenada. At the time I mentioned that many seemed indifferent at best and rude at worst. I have been here for just over two months now, and I can tell you that there are many I have encountered since my last post who are down right delightful. I have realized - I think - that Grenada is not very unlike many of the Islands down here. And, for that matter, anywhere else in the developing world. There are those who see folks like me - I'm still a tourist no matter the tan that suggests I live here - as being as from wealthy _______ (you pick the country and fill in the blank), and therefore are (understandably) envious of those of us they may see as 'rich', and coming to take advantage of them in some way. And, by the way, I've now been to most Islands down here, so it's not as though I've not encountered this type of attitude/culture before .... So ... perhaps I should have given it a bit more time for me to acclimatize.

On to more positive commentary.

As I have been touring about, I have discovered a most beautiful Island that boasts incredible topography featuring arable valleys surrounded by lush rain forest; beautiful vistas overlooking the Caribbean Sea, and a (smallish) number of fantastic beaches. Note: There are 43 beaches on the Island. I've been to about 10 of them. So far, I'd say that a half dozen are great. The others not so much.

Tomorrow we travel to the second of the 3 main Islands comprising the country: Carriacou. With only 7,000 inhabitants, we expect to find a much slower pace (how slow can you go?) and an economy built almost solely on fishing, agriculture and to a much lesser extent: tourism. (There are only a handful of B&B's and Inns on the Island.) We do hope however hope to swim with the turtles!

Once back, I'll put together a quick posting.

One last observation. We met good friends off of the Celebrity Millennium this past week. They were loving the trip and, it was apparent to me that others seemed to be enjoying St. Georges.

Grenada: my first impression

Grenada (not Ger Nada, which is in Spain) in an unquestionably a beautiful Island country; the last major Island along the chain of other Caribbean gems. I have been here since the middle of December, and intend to depart mid-March. I hope to get to know the Island and some of its people well by then. For now, I offer only my first impressions.

Grenada's population is about 110,000 scattered about some 133 square miles of land which changes from lush jungle - and a peak elevation of 1,910 feet - to traditional Caribbean fare; there are 43 beaches as an example, although only 5 or 6 generally catch the visitor's eye.

Cruise lines that visit include Cunard, RCI and Celebrity. I've also seen one of the 'Windjammer' ships in the St. Georges harbour. You can get here by air as well: AA, Air Canada and several other US and European air carriers service the island on a daily basis. Finding a direct flight is possible, but many fly through either Miami or Puerto Rico.

Here's my 'beef' so far:

Although I have met some wonderful Grenadian people thus far, I must admit to feeling that only the rare and exceptional individual gives a darn that I'm here at all. By this, I do not take personal exception to the fact that the local folks care that I in particular have visited their country, its just I don't think that the average citizen cares one whit that ANY tourist has bothered to choose this Island as a destination. I would say that the word 'indifferent' would describe the prevailing attitude of many.

One guide book I read characterizes this behaviour as 'shyness', and as part of the culture. This may well be partially true of some, but I believe that this attitude of indifference is borne out of a lack of understanding as to how their economy actually functions. That tourism (after the many agricultural products the 'Spice Ile' offers to the world) is tied directly to how the country prospers, is lost on the many, many others who apparently eke out a living by scraping together the abundance of fruits and vegetables the land has to offer. Of course the apparent disparity between tourist wealth, and the average man on the street doesn't help one bit as well.

The country needs to double down on education at all levels. If Grenada is to prosper in the future it must try to become the model against which other service economies in the region are measured. This will take time. It will also be well worth the investment, as Grenada has enormous potential. If I had 25 years to wait, I'd be purchasing land here right now. As it is, I don't have the 25 years. Oh well...

About getting sea-sick: All modern ships have computer operated stabilizers...

You likely don't know what they are, but the invention of these underwater fins that protrude out from either side of the keel allow you to sip your Rum Punch or slurp your Lobster Bisque without getting it all over your designer duds. P & O's 1950-built Chusan was the first liner to be fitted with a pair and today they're standard on all ships. The movable fins work by counteracting a ship's roll and keeping the ride smooth.

This is just a short nugget I hope is of some interest. I've been suffering a bit of wri ... blogger's block recently.

Skip trying to build an igloo yourself. Canada's Hôtel de Glace, built exclusively of ice and snow, does it for you.

At the beginning of December each year, workers build the entire hotel's rooms and columns, furniture and sculptures out of ice and snow. For the opening this January, when the hotel celebrates its 10th anniversary, workers used 15,000 tons of snow and 500 tons of ice.

Hôtel de Glace opened Jan. 4 and will remain open until April 4 for overnight stays, public tours, corporate events, weddings, art exhibitions and film and TV productions.

The hotel is in Sainte-Catherine-de-la-Jacques-Cartier, 23 miles from Quebec City and 149 miles from Montreal. Quebec's winter temperatures can range from minus-13 degrees Fahrenheit in February to 41 degrees in March.

According to Travel Week Magazine' recent Luxury Supplement (dated August 12, 2010) "Luxury travel is on the rise".

They say that "Last year travellers were focused on finding affordable ways to live the good life. This year luxury travel has bounced back in a big way, with numbers more than doubling since 2009".

They go on to say that according to a survey by Vacations.com, "74% of luxury- focused member travel agents reported an average increase in sales, with 23% reporting growth of up to 200%..." over the same period a year ago.

I've been asked on several occasions: why 'Luxury' travel agent?

Here's why ...

Over the past 30 years or so I've traveled virtually all around the world. When I was younger - just starting my business career - I did not have the resources to travel First Class; Business Class for that matter. Back then, unless I was on company business it was Coach all the way for me. We've all been there. It is not a very pleasant way to travel. But ... that was then!

This is now ... I've worked hard and smart and I've done well. I've learned the difference between price and value. I also know that with few exceptions, you get what you pay for in this world. I have learned that - to the extent possible - I want to know that someone won't have his or her hand in my pocket every time I turn around while I am on vacation. Most importantly, I have learned that it is OK to enjoy the fruits of my success. Why shouldn't I be as comfortable as possible? Enjoy the finest cuisine? Drink vintage wines? Enjoy the spa?

And so it is in the cruise business!

You certainly can opt for that 7 day, $399 Caribbean cruise, where everything except the food is an extra. Extra for drinks. For wine with meals. Excursions. Gratuities. Airfare. Less than 180 square foot cabins. And on and on it goes. By the time you disembark you will feel like you have been picked clean. I'm glad to see that you are still with me!

The cruises and associated travel products I prefer to offer my clients are decidedly more refined. More likely to please. More inclusive of charges, fees, extras of almost any type. Large or suite-only accommodations. Yes, the cost appears considerably greater than for the bargain basement variety of cruise products some others would sell you, and of course it will cost you more when all is said and done, but not that much more when virtually everything to do with your luxury vacation is taken care of in a first class way right from the start. And, as for quality? No contest!

No more gratuities, fees, bar charges, airfare. (At least one luxury cruise line is currently offering 2-for-1 air, with additional bonuses thrown in as well). Your vacation will be more relaxed. No loudspeaker announcements trying to get you to attend a second rate art auction or some such contrived event, both day and night.

Luxury travel is by definition a better experience all around. Satisfaction rates for those who choose the best are near 100%. The food is better. The service is less obtrusive, but is nonetheless better. The atmosphere is largely more intimate (many of this class of cruise sail on smaller ships carrying 400-800 passengers). More relaxed. Refined without being stuffy. And, unless you choose to do so, most high end ships do not even require you to pack a tuxedo or a formal gown. (N.B. For those who do wish to experience the grand days of ocean liner travel of days gone by, there is always the fleet of Cunard's luxury fleet of 'Queens' to satisfy.)

So. Add up all the extras you should expect to pay for a lesser class of ship; a lesser quality vacation, then - truthfully - add to your budget to accommodate the very different kind of experience you will expect to enjoy during your vacation, and I believe you will soon begin to see the false economy of going on the 'cheap'.

So that's it. The bottom line for me is this: ensure happy satisfied clients by tailoring travel products to client needs and wants. Exceed all expectations. Help people discover the world while enjoying all the best it has to offer. Time after time.

Cruise ships are boring: Although this is a common fear of non-cruisers, no one should be bored with cruising. You can be as active (or inactive) as you like. Cruise ship activities range from working out in a high-tech gym to sitting on the deck and reading a book. You can learn computer skills, a foreign language, how to play bridge, or how to dance. Changing course

I've decided to change course with this Blogging business I'm doing.

To begin with the name has changed to more closely reflect the subject matter that I'm interested in sharing. So from here on in you can find me at www.luxurytravelagent.blogspot.com.

It will take me a bit more time to fully round out what and how frequently I'll be posting, but my goal is to provide more meaningful insight into the world of luxury travel, and in particular luxury cruising.

I've already changed my favourite links section. You might want to check out 'WanaaJet' ... very cool concept!

So I'll continue to ponder, but check back soon. I hope it will be a more entertaining ride from here.

Looking forward and back ...

It's been a while since I've written anything, so I thought that I would bring all my loyal followers - you know who the one or two of you are - up to speed on my recent past as well as (perhaps) a glimpse at the immediate future.

Note to self: is there any such thing as an 'immediate future' or is it an oxymoron?

The lake house is now open and has been action central for a few months now. The ice went out early this year and I think that some of us cottagers - certainly I - were/was taken off guard. As a result, what should have been a 'head start' year turned into a rather more drawn out opening. Marg was hard at the sewing machine in Ottawa preparing for #1's wedding, leaving it to me to open, and get the place clean enough to satisfy you know who. It is unlikely that I have achieved the mission entirely, but I feel that I have close enough to pass muster.

For the un-initiated,our #1 is now married and everyone in the Meldrum household is in full decompression mode following an action packed couple of weeks on the east coast.

We were on the east coast, first in Mahone Bay, just outside Halifax. We rented a house - which has turned out to be a magnificent old home - totally redone - with three decks, an enormous great-room, and only across the road to the ocean! The place also has a barn and a guest house on a property which is at least 2 to 3 acres in size. It was fantastic.

We (that is to say Marg and I, Diane E, Tom, Tara and the two little ones) then travelled to Halifax proper where we got ready for our big BBQ the evening before the big day at the second house we managed to find. Also a great 5 bedroom home complete with grand piano and gourmet kitchen. It is here that we welcomed my sister and our #2 into our own private whirling madhouse. All went well in the end and from the feedback we received, a good time was had by all.

I rented fancy Nikon lens for the wedding day, but I did so only the day before. Not nearly enough time to master the nuances of the thing. Fast glass is fun, but you most definitely need to practice, practice, practice if you hope to achieve great results. Though I did not give myself the time, I still had good deal of fun.

We also had a blast watching the kids and Winston fly around exploring. The jury is still out, but if I was a betting man, I would say that our poor dog would have won the prize for being the most exhausted at the end of each and every day we were there.

I've been feeling pretty calm these past couple of days, but I confess that I do not trust my emotions, and still have a certain uneasy feeling about seeing Leigh and Aaron move so far away so soon. Far be it for me to stand between Leigh and her medical aspirations. Looks like I might have to find cheap air to Grenada!

The newly weds have now arrived at Crannog, and so we will get a few precious days with them before they begin their adventure and head south.

The cruise business that I've launched is proceeding apace, but I must confess I hope I'm able to attract a few more prospects in the coming months. I have done a great deal of work to understand the industry players, and i have found that there are some truly awesome itineraries on any number of equally awesome ships.

Hangin' in there in Halifax

Halifax is where I found my new 'pusher man'!

Well then... you never know where you'll find a doctor that apparently knows something about what's ailing ya, do you?

This morning I spent a couple of hours in the Neuro-surgery unit at the main Halifax hospital. Couple of pain/ Neurology Specialists who deal primarily in Neuropathic pain. That's the kind I've grudgingly come to know.

So ... it turns out that the question of the day - dear reader - is this: What will a recovering Heroin addict and I soon have in common? If you guessed Methadone, you'd win the cigar! Though I don't actually have a cigar - I don't smoke, and would counsel you to quit if you did ... so this whole contest thing is only a metaphor... allegory... whatever? I digress. There IS NO CIGAR!

It looks like the following 'better living through chemistry' compounds - also known as best practice in pain management - may find their way coursing their way through my body in the very near future:

Methadone - to replace the morphine I presently use;

The addition of a 'cannabis' based compound in pill form - regrettably without the buzz; and finally the addition of an Amnytriptolyne compound... all the better to try to control this fu*ked up skin pain that the lo’ MVA brought about.

All to say, I am very encouraged by what these folks had to tell me this morning. I will be interesting to see how soon and in what order these drug trials will begin to occur, and what results they may yield. After almost six and a half years living with this particular monkey, I really am looking for a chance to replace my all to familiar monkey with a sparkling, brand new - more effective - one.

Now onward into my week end… I'm looking forward to spending some QT with # 1 & 2 together with the BFFs. I see a dog park, a dinner out and perhaps a movie in my future.

I do love this part of our wonderful country, so missing M & Winnie can be tolerated. I suspect that M will be just as happy for me to be out of her hair in any event, especially since the entire place in Ottawa is fast becoming sewing central in advance of the forthcoming nuptials.

Well ... I've taken the plunge...

Most folks I've come to know have learned that my life was altered by an accident several years ago. Since then I have been trying to find something to do with my life that would fit my new situation; that could be of some value to me, my family and friends, and that I could be passionate about. I've been waiting for this day for 12 or 15 years ... I can't remember...

There was a time some dozen - or more - years ago when my eldest daughter - Leigh - came home from Unionville High School, and announced that she would be taking a science course as a co-op student at Markham General Hospital ...

She was to be assigned to the admin area of the operating theatre there, checking patients in - and with luck out - throughout the morning, two or three days a week.

Perhaps 3 or 4 weeks into her 10(?) week term, she called one day to inform us that we were to notify the school that she would not be attending classes for the remainder of that particular day. She had been invited by one of the hospital's surgeons to observe - up close and personal - the removal of a tumour from a certain patient's abdomen. She was quick to point out that this particular tumour was the 'size of a basketball, dad!!!' and as such, it would be a travesty should she not get the chance to stay and watch. Life would end as she knew it, etc., etc. Leigh was 15 I think, and following the aforementioned surgery ended, we were informed in no uncertain terms that she was going to become a 'general surgeon.

Fast forward a few years and Leigh has successfully graduated from McGill with a science degree in Anatomy and Cell Biology. Throughout her stay at McGill she - mostly - excelled, but she did stumble a wee bit in her third year for a variety of reasons - most beyond her control. Net, net, her GPA suffered and was not quite high enough for a direct shot at Med School. And - in any event - we were informed that she wasn't much interested in being a doctor any longer. So that was that!

Then... Leigh, having met a nice fellow who was to pursue a Masters degree at Dalhousie, decided to follow him there and perhaps look into more schooling (becoming a lawyer came up) , or find work of some kind. Or, at the very least, have an adventure.

A short time passed, and as fortune would have it, she met a fellow who had recently graduated Med School and was beginning his career in Halifax. Over coffee one day, he mentioned that his decision point vis a vis why he chose medicine, came down to 'not wanting to look back when he was 50 and wonder - what if?'. This single conversation was to have a profound effect on my daughter.

Shortly thereafter, she had networked her way into working for one of Canada's top Neurosurgeons; had met with the medical admission folks at Dal, and informed us that she had put together a game plan that would get her back on track to become the doctor she had dreamed of being.

Over the past 18 months, Leigh has worked her butt off, and has once again become a straight A student. She has excelled at her job with Dr. Mendez. And she has met the love of her life whom she will marry this coming July. Marg and I could not be prouder of her achievements - until today.

She will start in early August, and beyond fulfilling her dreams, she has made Marg and my decision as to where in the world to get out of the Canadian winters sooooo much easier... Granada/Barbados here we come!

So ... Now I can safely worry only (for a while) about #2: Heather... Why, I really can't realistically figure out. SHE is finishing up her MBA - also at Dal - and having negotiated her way through full time schooling; full time consulting in her partnership - 'Wakeside'; full time TAing, and yes: full time girlfriend... she will graduate this spring one of the top of her class. Surely some enlightened employer will see her tremendous potential, and snap her up. Then she will be on her way too.

In the mean while, this particular dad is destined to worry - despite all the evidence that it is not really necessary.

A man and his dog

A couple of days ago - and a beautiful day it was - I took Winston on a short journey. We ventured across the Ottawa river to the small town of Wakefield, Quebec, perhaps 40 minutes from where we live here in Ottawa.

Wakefield is a village on the western shore of the Gatineau River, at the confluence of the La Pêche River in the Outaouais region of Quebec. The village, named after the town ofWakefield in West Yorkshire, England, is now the southern edge of the municipality of La Pêche, and was founded in 1830 by Irish, Scottish, and English immigrants. It is approximately twenty minutes from Ottawa, Ontario driving north on Autoroute 5 and Route 105 at Route 366

The village's primary industry is tourism. The main attractions, in addition to a picturesque setting, are the covered bridge spanning the Gatineau River, the recently restored Maclaren Mill, named after an early family in the region, now operated as the Wakefield Inn and Spa.

Former Canadian prime minister Lester B. Pearson is buried in MacLaren Cemetery in Wakefield.

Winston and I had great fun. He ran all over the place and generally was easy to spot:

except when we ventured up the trail towards the summit of the small mountain which overlooks the village. Can you spot Winston?:

We spent perhaps an hour on our mini-trek, then called it an afternoon. Walking down from the cemetery gave me a glimpse of why its not totally shitty that I'm spending winter in this god forsaken country of mine!

Pretty nice, eh!

So that's about it for this one... nothing too deep or insightful this posting. Perhaps I'm still smarting from the end of the Sens 10 game winning streak?!

Tonight is the Superbowl, and I'll likely be watching alone, as there's no one in my household that gives a sh*t but me.

Tomorrow its off to the gym to begin the long, painful process of losing 20 lbs before the nuptials in July. I think there is a good chance I'll do it, but I can't say I'm going to enjoy it much. Wish me luck won't you?

A father's pride knows no bounds

Leigh and Heather Xmas 2008

Here we are only a month into 2010, and all Hell is breaking loose in the vacuous darkness of my twisted - some would say damaged - brain.

Leigh has accepted Aaron's proposal of marriage, and try as I might, it seems as though I - and this will be a surprise to absolutely no one that knows me - have an opinion on just about everything that has to do with the forthcoming nuptials.

It is no secret that I am inclined towards a conservative point of view, so it had surprised the heck out of me that I have chosen to project on to anyone that will care to listen - and less and less of these people exist each passing day - a rather un-conservative point of view on how my number #1 should manage her big day.

I have railed on about the stupidity of purchasing a traditional wedding dress. This in favor of going on a spree in Holt's, where she could buy a magnificent gown that she could wear at future 'formal' occasions; I am hopeful that she will not tread the path so well worn with respect to the way the wedding party dresses. The prospect of seeing her sister and the other 'attendants' standing all in a row dressed in Sea Foam Green makes me shudder.

I am - almost - baffled as to why I even give a hoot. It is Leigh's day after all, and what business is it of mine whether or not she wears one thing or another. I know that she will make a beautiful bride no matter what she wears.

Maybe it's fear. Maybe it's my way of compensating - for I know that I will be a tearful mess when the time comes.

The tears will primarily be of pride. And love. And - I'm embarrassed to say - of loss. Silly of me I know, but there you have it. Anyone reading this who has any insight into my make up will know that I am nothing, if not overwhelmingly sentimental.

And the tears will not just be about Leigh. My thoughts will be for Heather as well.

I will inevitably project my sense of loss on her also. Heather - my brain will insist - will be losing part of her sister. And, it's only a matter of time before some lucky - and foresightful - man will be asking for her hand as well. Christ, it seems like only yesterday that I was pretending to sleep when they would wake up in the middle of the night to be changed!

So there you have it ... I am a man on the wrong side of the half way mark - scared to death.

Despite having cheated death once and paralysis twice; and despite the fact that intellectually I KNOW that life for me - at this precise moment - should be wonderful - and all I seem to do is obsess about trivialities.

If I come out of this with my marriage intact it will not be because of me. Rather because I was so incredibly lucky that Marg said yes to me so many years ago (when I scared the shit out of my mother and father over the same issue). Marg and I were only 21. Liegh at least had the good sense to wait until she was 27. She would certainly have caused my heart to fail were she to be as foolish as her parents were back then.

I've vented enough for this entry. I will do my part. And I'll do it with as much grace as I can muster. And I'll do it medicated - no doubt. And, finally I hope I will do it in a fashion that will not cause either of my fantastic, beautiful children one moment of embarrassment.

Time for me to buy stock in Kimberly-Clark.

Christmas 2009 - a memorable one it will be!

Well... another year has almost come and gone. It is incredible how fast time seems to fly these days despite not really having established my role in society, and the anxiety this has caused me lately. Kind of feel that this included picture says it all ... an open canvas ... beautiful, but some how frighteningly inaccessible. (This pic is of the Saw Grass of the Florida Everglades.)

The good news is that we are - mostly - healthy, and my kids are well on their intended paths. Heather to working in business, and Leigh as a doctor - given that all proceeds as well as it ha been for her in her quest to get accepted to med school. I will simply be amazed should this endeavor fail!

This morning we recieved a call from Leigh, who is in Barcelona for the holidays. She had great - and for a father inevitably terrible news - she has become engaged to her man Aaron.

I am in fact thrilled, as Aaron seem a great match for her, but it is yet one more step toward total independence for her - and ultimately Heather as they begin their own lives totally separated from Marg and me.

I guess I have been dreading this moment ever since I held Leigh, then Heather as infants. It is certainly true that daughters hold unusually strong sway over a father's heartstrings. Though I did not cry with emotional overload today, nor when Aaron did Marg and I the considerable honor of asking for her hand, I can say that I have not fully processed the whole deal even though it has been almost a month since I have known.

Of course, it is to soon to know when their marriage will be held, nor where in the world they intend to hold it. I do hope that they do not fall prey to the considerable pressures of traditionalism. I don't honestly know how I would handle it should they opt to spend money on what - after all - is just a party lasting only a few hours. Life is difficult enough for this generation - the economy, costs for housing and education and the like - without frittering away money needlessly.

I am glad that my uncle Stewart is here, and able to share in the good news. This made all the more poignant, as my sister-in-law - Tara - lost her mother to cancer just a few days ago. So although none of Leigh's grandparents remain alive, at least one of that - perhaps the greatest generation - has been able to share her joy.

Heather seems genuinely pleased as Leigh has already asked her to be her Maid of Honor. Even though these two siblings fight like cats and dogs on occasion, I am happy - almost beyond belief - that they seem to have developed a very deep love for one another. I cannot help observing that their relationship seems to have improved immeasurably since they stopped living together. Heather seems also to have found equilibrium with her man - James - a very nice young man she has been seeing on and off for a number of years. I would not surprise me if they did not some day declare themselves as well. Please though... not for a while. Dad needs time to let this first one sink in!

So in just the past month, Cathy - Marg's sister - turned 60; we lost Tara's mom, Leigh is engaged and we have learned of Heather's intention to move to Toronto once her MBA has been completed in April. Oh... and Leigh has learned of her first, all important, interview with St. Georges University Medical School. I can hardly keep up any more!

Tonight, we are all off to Tom and Tara's for Christmas dinner, No doubt it will be a little more subdued than normal given the circumstances, but with both my nieces under 12, their youthful exuberance should help buoy all our spirits.

To anyone out there that might be wasting your time actuall reading this drivel, Merry, Merry... and should this scribbler not get to it in time, have a safe and healthy 2010.

Don't let the bastards get you down... there is something you can do...

Check out this 'letter to the Editor' written by a Canadian woman; a housewife in New Brunswick - to her local newspaper. This is one ticked off lady. Oh how it also applies to the U.S., U.K. and Australia:

Are we fighting a war on terror or aren't we? Was it or was it not
started by Islamic people who brought it to our shores on September
11, 2001 and have continually threatened to do so since?

Were people from all over the world, not brutally murdered that day,
in downtown Manhattan, across the Potomac from the nation's capitol
and in a field in Pennsylvania?

Did nearly three thousand men, women and children die a horrible,
burning or crushing death that day, or didn't they?

And I'm supposed to care that a few Taliban were claiming to be
tortured by a justice system of the nation they come from and are
fighting against in a brutal insurgency.
I'll start caring when Osama bin Laden turns himself in and repents
for incinerating all those innocent people on 9/11.

I'll care about the Koran when the fanatics in the Middle East start
caring about the Holy Bible, the mere belief of which is a crime
punishable by beheading in Afghanistan.

I'll care when these thugs tell the world they are sorry for hacking
off Nick Berg's head while Berg screamed through his gurgling slashed
throat.

I'll care when the cowardly so-called 'insurgents' in Afghanistan come
out and fight like men instead of disrespecting their own religion by
hiding in mosques.

I'll care when the mindless zealots who blows themselves up in search
of nirvana care about the innocent children within range of their
suicide bombs.

I'll care when the Canadian media stops pretending that their freedom
of speech on stories is more important than the lives of the soldiers
on the ground or their families waiting at home to hear about them when
something happens.

In the meantime, when I hear a story about a CANADIAN soldier roughing
up an Insurgent terrorist to obtain information, know this:

I don't care.

When I see a wounded terrorist get shot in the head when he is told
not to move because he might be booby-trapped, you can take it to the
bank:

I don't care.

When I hear that a prisoner, who was issued a Koran and a prayer mat,
and 'fed special' food that is paid for by my tax dollars, is
complaining that his holy book is being 'mishandled,' you can absolutely
believe
in your heart of hearts:

I don't care.

And oh, by the way, I've noticed that sometimes it's spelled 'Koran'
and other times 'Quran.' Well, Jimmy Crack Corn you guessed it,

I don't care!!

If you agree with this viewpoint, pass this on to all your E-mail
friends Sooner or later, it'll get to the people responsible for this
ridiculous behaviour!

If you don't agree, then by all means hit the delete button. Should
you choose the latter, then please don't complain when more atrocities
committed by radical Muslims happen here in our great Country!

And may I add:

'Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a
difference in the world. But, the Soldiers don't have that problem.'

I have another quote that I would like to add, AND.......I hope you
forward all this.

Remberance Day

As this Remberance Day approaches, I am reminded of my father, who spent the better part of 5 years in Europe fighting in the Second World War so that I - and my family - could enjoy the freedoms that so many seem to take for granted today.

It seems to me that it has become popular in some circles to believe that somehow 'we should all just get along', and that war has no place in today's world. This to me is more than gaulling. Are we to allow present day despots do what my father fought so hard to prevent? Have we become so politically correct, that even faced with overwhelming evidence that our 'western' way of life is being threatened in much the same way as was the civilized word when the Natzi's began their reign of terror? Can we not use our common sense to support the UN and NATO in the civilized world's opposition to the remarkable horror of what is now unfolding in Afganistan this very day?

The only difference that I see vs now and 1941, is that the Talaban and those who conspire with them have wrapped themselves up in a religious 'sheep's clothing', and that somehow, because of this religious angle, the conflict somehow does not threaten us in the same way as it did then.

I have read - and I believe - that Canada's army has never shot a gun unprovoked. But, I believe it is also true that Canada has always been one of the first to take up arms to defeat tyranny. And so I believe it should continue to be.

So tomorrow, I will be thinking of my dad, and my uncle and those many, many more who fought so many years ago to preserve our freedom. And, I will also be thinking of my fellow Canadians - both present and future - who have and will continue to put themselves in harms way so that we may continue to enjoy the freedom that my dad and his confederates fought so hard, so many years ago to protect.

Thanksgiving 2009

Last night myself, Marg, Heather, Winston and Oliver joined 28 odd others at Sheila and Jan's place to dine on turkey - with all the trimmings, and a wonderful ham - from my good friend 'Bill the butcher' of 'Just an Old Fashioned Butchery' in Oakville.

The real story this week end can be seen in the attached pictures. The fall colors were spectacular for this time of year. Normally, by TG the landscape begins to take on a grey hue as the leaves fall to reveal only the bare tree trunks and the exposed granite of the Laurentian mountains.

All these pics were taken at Lac-des-Seize-Iles, QC. Short and to the point this posting.

Greenwich, October 2009 (or when my photo skills went AWOL!)

Stan Wort is my oldest friend. He's at least 89. My uncle Stewart is older - at 91 - but I'm related, so that doesn't count.

I've known Stan for over 20 years, but I'd have to say that it's only been over the past five or six years that I have regarded him more as a friend than just an acquaintance. Peg his wife has recently had a few health issues, and therefore Stan has been her full time care giver for a number of years. And, at his age, this is a hard job.

Stan is a remarkable man, however. And he's been remarkable for a long time. He's had a life unlike most folks you are likely to know.

Stan grew up in England, and as young men of his era did, he joined the Royal Navy and went to war. He was sent to Hong Kong early in the campaign, and was ultimately captured by the Japaneese during the Battle of Hong Kong. He then spent the following 4 years or so as a POW in a truly unbelievable hell on earth. He Survived. He recovered; married; had two children, all the while rising to the top of his company - Rolls Royce. Then wrote a book telling his tale as a POW.

Everyone in my aquaintance should buy and read this book! It's called PRISONER OF THE RISING SUN (ISBN-10: 1848840039). You can buy it at Amazon.com.

Stan begins his story by relating some of the humorous situations in which he found himself and provides a realistic account of what life was like for servicemen in pre war Hong Kong. He describes the prelude to war and the part he played in the Battle for Hong Kong. Then it follows the story of what happened to him when taken prisoner and the life and death situations he found himself in while a POW in prison camps in both Hong Kong and Japan. It tells what it was like to be shipped to Japan in the hold of Japanese merchant men with constant fear of being torpedoed. In Japan itself he and his fellow prisoners were used as slave labor. Treatment was harsh and brutal and although many of them died the Japanese never broke the spirit of the survivors. You get the idea! In August 1945 he saw the Japanese bow before loudspeakers and although he did not realize it then, heard the Japanese Emperor announce the surrender of Japan.

Oh... Stan has also survived cancer. I am in awe of this man. He overcomes every obstical. And he does so with humor and humility. He is one of the most important men I know.

He is also a fly fisher of some renown - this is how I met him, As one - if not the - best buddy of my uncle Stewart, he has been on countless trips into the wild searching for Atlantic Salmon and the best single malt available. It was on one of these trips that I first met Stan. That was in the early '80s.

Our recent trip to Connecticut allowed me to facilitate a visit with Stewart and Stan, as well as allow Marg to do a bit of damage the fabric shops of New York city. I think Stan and Peg enjoyed our company. I know this because Peg ventured out with us on more than one occasion. Venturing out is not something she has done very often of late. I think Marg had a great deal to do with this. She and Peg seemed to get along famously, and as women they were able to communicate better than either me or Stewart. And I know that Stewart had a ball. I know this because of the tears of laughter I witnessed while he and Stan kibitzed.

I have included a few of the photographs I took along the way. Somehow my (minor) skills as a photographer seemed to elude me. These are the best of a bad bunch.

For those who have never visited Greenwich, it is a most beautiful and affluent city just across the NY - Connecticut border. I doubt you could buy even a modest home there for much less than several million dollars these days. With this kind of tax base it has wonderful facilities, including many beautiful parks. I saw more Aston Martins, Maseratis and Bentleys than you could shake a stick at.

In short, it was great to see good friends. And to dream a little. Even be inspired.

Avoiding marital conflict

Just a short doodle today on how I managed to avoid major, long term conflict. Buy independance. One vehicle simply won't get the job done. So today I contracted for this '06 S40. First sedan since 1985 or there about.

Off to Conn. tomorrow AM, so I should have more worthwhile things to say in a week or so. Also hope to have some decent pics to share.

This has to be one of my favorite vistas. This scene represents a fair bit of what is important in my life.

On the left you will see my Uncle Stewart's place - Balgownie. Named after the Brig o' Balgownie (originally Bridge of Don), a 13th century bridge spanning the River Don in Old Aberdeen, Aberdeen, Scotland.

Construction of the bridge was begun in the late 13th century by Richard Cementarius, although its completion was not until 1320 at the time of the Scottish War of Independence. After falling into disrepair in the mid 16th century it was extensively renovated in 1605. In 1830 a newer bridge was built five hundred yards downstream which now bears that name of the Bridge of Don.

Throughout its history the bridge has been considered an important asset. For five centuries possession of the bridge was the only way to move large armies quickly along the eastern coast of Aberdeenshire. It also provided a trade route to the wealthy areas of the north-east of Scotland.

The bridge is constructed of granite and sandstone. Its single gothic arch has span of over 12 metres and at low tide the apex of the arch lies over 17 metres above the water-line.

Next over, is my cousin Bill's cottage - Kelvin Haugh, also - I believe - named after a bridge in Scotland. I have so far not been able to track down its history. Stay tuned.

I spent much time at both these cottages as a young person. This is where I developed my deep affection for the concept of family and for 16 Island Lake in general.

The next cottage over - un-named - belongs to my cousin Shiela, and was built perhaps 15 years ago on one of the only (underwater) beaches on the lake.

My life in the present tense

Today I’m reflecting on my life and how it has changed so dramatically a result of my accident, and to a certain extent even more profoundly, as a result of the successful conclusion of the resulting legal action.

Even the resulting physical challenges have proven to be less debilitating than the emotional toll taken as a result of not being able to work; to be able to - sustainably - contribute to the world.

Granted only my lifestyle - where I live at any given time - has prevented me from continuing as a Rotary member. This has been my choice. So it is now up to me to find a suitable activity or activities to fill the surprisingly large void.

I also find that I am now also hyper sensitive to the predicament that my sister finds herself in. I know deep down that she has the character and skills required to survive what ever life throws at her. We had the same upbringing after all. I do hope however that she finds it in herself to be more flexible and future looking as she peruses the next chapter in her working life.

For me, this blog will be one of the outlets that will let me share my thoughts with who ever out there in cyberspace trips over this thing.

I have decided that photography and woodworking will be two other outlets. But I am floundering in my pursuit of an intellectual activity. Charity work was the first thing that came to mind, but as with Rotary, you tend to have to be available in one place to be effective. I live in a minimum of two locations. And really, I want to be living in a third - in the south - for a few months in the winter.

So, what to do? My thinking at the moment is to do something online. Perhaps try to start an online support group for people in my situation (sufferers of neuropathic pain). Not certain how to do this.

Maybe try to launch a mechanism for the raising of funds to support research into how to control nerve pain. This is something that medicine has a hard time doing. Even the very expensive drug ‘Gabapentin’ only moderates the level of discomfort I have. This I think would be a worthwhile pursuit. How to begin? This is my dilemma.

I’ve uploaded a couple of my most recent photographs, just because of the title of this blog.

I’m going to try to post more regularly from this point on. Maybe once or twice per week. Perhaps the discipline of writing will help me figure out my life faster than not.

New Ottawa Home

We close on our home in Ottawa tomorrow.

I'm excited about this because I'll be able to build the basement area pretty much as I see fit. This will doubtless include a bedroom for our kids, washroom for us and importantly, a TV/Media area for me!

We've not been inside the building for a few months now and I really only remember a few details. Anyway here is a pic of the exterior. This I have to remember because the last time I tried to check up on the site, I got lost for over an hour trying to find it.

Come with me to ‘Jade World,’ St. Lucia

My wife and I booked a week at ‘Anse Chastanet,’ one of St. Lucia’s premier resorts, but when we were invited to spend our week at ‘The Jade Mountain Resort’ instead, we simply weren’t prepared for how ‘Jade World’ would change our concept of what a Caribbean vacation could all be about ...

The architecture is as stunning as are the views

The Jade Mountain Resort is an ultra-luxury resort within a luxury resort. Located between the small fishing village of Soufriere and St. Lucia’s Capital City of Castries, Jade Mountain stands as the realized dream of the inspired designer, architect and owner, Nick Troubetzkoy.
Facing the two world-famous ‘Piton’ mountains and the Caribbean Sea, Jade Mountain is as much a work of art as it is a hotel.

Built almost entirely of local resources including coral tiles from neighboring islands and crushed blush toned plaster rock from Barbados and hand-built by workers from Soufriere, Nick and his team have created a truly unique vacation destination.

Our ‘Sanctuary’ was not to be believed, and what the heck is a ‘major domo’?

Following our ride from the airport, were escorted from the Anse Chastanet check-in area directly to our room by Vito our ‘major domo’ or Butler, who was assigned to take care of us and see to our every wish while on or off the resort for the week. He even had a few surprises up his sleeve for later on. They were delightful.

The word ‘sanctuary’ was chosen advisedly. We were greeted by a multi tiered space roughly 30 feet wide by 50 feet in depth. To top it off, the outside wall was absent. In its place was magnificent open air view of both ‘Piton’ mountains and the Caribbean Sea. We had become ‘one’ with the natural landscape we had traveled to see - and we had only been on the property twenty minutes!

Vito’s initial orientation session smoothed over the registration details and introduced us to the Firefly, a modern and proportable equivalent to ringing the bell for service. The ‘Firefly’ cellular communicator was lent to us for the week to provide immediate access to Vito or the Jade reception desk 24 hours a day. Basically they were at our beckon call!

This ‘Firefly’ device is the only technology to be found within the Sanctuary, a deliberate feature of the resort. We were in ‘Jade World’ now – who needs a TV? There were, however, two computers located at the Jade reception area that may be used free of charge for those who require access to email or the internet.)

Our Sanctuary featured a dining and sitting area, a lounge with a double daybed for lazy mornings shared with a cup of coffee, and of course a King bed on its own elevated level, complete with four posts and mosquito netting. There was a view from every corner of our new home. Even as we showered in the oversized bathing area (complete with double sinks, large stand up rain shower and ‘built for two’ chromotherapy whirlpool tub), we could see the ‘Piton’ mountains by way of strategically placed floor to (15 foot) ceiling mirrors. The furnishings were designed by vendors specifically chosen by Mr. Troubetzkoy and made of tropical hardwoods. Over twenty sustainably harvested species were could be found throughout the site. Other Sanctuaries, all uniquely designed and furnished, featured private infinity pools overlooking the landscape, each one different from the next.

The ‘Jade Mountain Club’ provided a feast for the body and soul.

Although guests have the option of eating ‘en suite’ for their entire stay, we chose the Jade Mountain Club, located at the very top of the hillside, as our primary dining destination. (Put sentence in here about other restaurants & tie in with package details). Our package included the optional MAP meal plan covering full breakfast and dinner.

The menu is overseen by consulting chef Allen Susser, of Miami’s famous ‘Chef Allen’s’. The eclectic ‘Jade Cuisine’ features flavorful and remarkably fresh, exotic ingredients, many of which are grown and harvested three times a week on the resort’s 600 acre plantation. All other provisionsare bought from local fishers and farmers directly. Only the AAA Angus beef and fresh lamb are imported from the USA and Australia respectfully. Even the wonderful bread and pastries together with the delicate deserts are made in-house.

The wine list is extensive and caters to a wide variety of tastes, if not budget.

It boasted everything from an N.V. Krug Grande Cuvee (US$445.00) to a 1996 Bollinger R.D. (US$490.00) to more moderate selections from France, Italy, Argentina, Chili, Australia, New Zealand and California. This impressive list caters to both the red- and white wine lover and ranges in price from US$45.00 to $175.00 or so a bottle.

A visit to the ‘Kie en Ceil’ SPA is just what my Doctor should have ordered.

We decided the Sweedish massage was up first for us, and at the appointed hour we were ushered into an attractive and soothing treatment area where we received the best massage ‘a deux’ either one of us have had in a long, long while. There is also a small, but well equipped fitness centre where you can work out on your own or with a personal trainer. For those inclined there are also myrid other recreational activities to enjoy such as tennis, ‘jungle’ biking, hiking, nature walks and of course swimming, snorkeling and SCUBA diving.

Oh… And there’s a beach too!

Some 577 steps down from the Celestial Terrace high a top the Jade Mountain Club is the beach ‘Jade’ shares with its sister resort Anse Chastanet. (Don’t worry, there are shuttles to take you back up the hill. All one has to do is call your ‘major domo’. Wait time 3 minutes.) and your ride is there in less than the time it takes to wash the sand from your toes.

Here is where you will also find the beach restaurant, dive shop and water taxi to the resort’s second beach, just a 2 minutes ride around the point. Upon your arrival at this sandy mecca, You will doubtless also will have the fortunate of meeting the irrepressible ‘Junior’ or one other of the many beach attendants who will be dispensing cold, mint scented towels to refresh your face as well as cool mint water to spritz over your entire body, just for good measure. Other services offered include lavish: cocktails and/or gourmet lunches delivered straight to your Tiki hut, and fresh towels and beach chairs arranged for your use. – everything is taken care of.

Jade Mountain is not for anybody

I’ve been reasonably free with my praise of what Jade Mountain has to offer, however, there are aspects of the resort that make this particular destination not for everyone.

To begin with, both Jade Mountain and it’s sister resort Anse Chastanet are onessentially built into the side of a mountain. This means that if you are not reasonably fit (even with the aide of the shuttles), you may not be comfortable getting around the property. This caution would hold if one was physically challenged as well. Yake this comment with a grain of salt as both my wife and I have phyical disabilities which restrict our mobility, and we did just fine. A causion nonetheless.

The second limitation, involves dollars and cents. You may find that you could stay a week at a (much) lesser resort for what you may reasonably expect to pay at Jade Mountain in one day -this not including the cost of airfare. Having said this, if you are seeking a truly unique, magical experience, and have a little money to burn, , this resort most is most definitely for you. It has afterall, won one of the coveted Condo Neste Traveller™ 2009 Best Resorts in the Caribbean® award.

If you go:

There are domestic flights to St. Lucia through Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Miami. Both Air Canada and West Jet fly to St. Lucia regularly. American is also a choice, however you will likely connect through Miami.

Resort representatives will meet you at the airport and transport you by mini-van to the property, by way of a 60 minute sceanic, but somewhat bumpy drive up the coast.

You can also opt for the helicopter transfer to or from the resort’s own heli-pad for $US220.00pp, an indulgence we took on our way home. Our pilot turned out to be a friendly Newfoundlander. He’s who has been flying for St. Lucia Helicopters for 18 years, and even he expressed that, after all that his time on the island, he cann’t seem to get enough of the island.
